Call for Artists
SWAP MEET at The Big Chill Festival 5-8 August 2010

After a successful first event at The Barbican in February, Swap Meet
moves to The Big Chill Festival.

Swap Meet is inspired by the infamous mix-tape swaps in 1980's L.A.,
where artists such as Dr Dre first distributed their live mixtapes. These
tapes were collages of vocals, beats in addition to samples taken from other
artists (working outside of the genre of hip hop). What Swap Meet aims
to facilitate is a live, physical, face to face exchange of material
between artists from different backgrounds enabling experimentation and infinite
collaging possibilities.  It also provides a platform for performance of
artists working within these areas.

The element of exchange and mixing of genres forms the backbone of
Swap Meet at the Big Chill. However the theme can be interpreted more broadly
for the festival and it would be great to incorporate theatre and dance
performance, visual art, stalls, installations and an area for circuit bending
within the Swap Meet area.

Opportunities

1. Installations - freestanding pieces. Please bear in mind that the
installation will be in a field and so will need to be stable and
resilient to extreme festival weather conditions. Additionally, although there is
power, this is limited.

2. Stalls - It would be better that these were approached as mini live
art performance platforms, workshop areas or art installations, rather than
standard market stalls. Please keep in mind the themes of Swap Meet
while putting together your proposal. Although the themes are open to
interpretation, it is important that they reflect an idea of swapping,
collage or re-appropriation of materials.

3. Performance - Time available for live music performance is limited.
However, there are more opportunities to do performances that aren't
necessarily stage dependent.

The proposal process
Please send outlines for proposals by Monday 15 March to
Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist gegen Spambots geschützt! JavaScript muss aktiviert werden, damit sie angezeigt werden kann. . If your proposal outline is short listed
you will be required to submit a full proposal with supporting images by Friday
26 March.

It is also worth noting ahead of submitting your proposals that Swap
Meet is an art concept and so there is very little money available to realize
installations or performances. However, The Big Chill attracts a music
and art loving crowd of 40,000 people, so a great opportunity to get your
work out there and seen. Additionally Swap Meet activities will be included
in press and marketing activity and artists/projects will be name checked
in the festival programme and on the website. Also, Swap Meet itself is a
fantastic networking opportunity for all artists involved and
hopefully a fun and positive experience to immerse yourself in.
